Jake Epping, a high school English teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine, learns from his friend Al, owner of the local diner, that the storeroom behind the counter is a portal to a single day in 1958. Al, now dying, hands Jake the mission that has become his obsession: to live in the past until November 22, 1963, and stop the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Jake builds a new life in the America of the late fifties and early sixties, tracks Lee Harvey Oswald, and falls in love, while discovering that the past does not want to be changed.
