Huxley came from a family of scientists — his grandfather was Thomas Henry Huxley, Darwin's most prominent defender — and the biology in the novel is written from the inside. It is usually read against Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four as the other model of totalitarian control: rule by pleasure rather than by fear. Orwell, who had been Huxley's French student at Eton, wrote about the comparison himself. The book has been adapted for television several times, most recently as a series in 2020
