The original Callahan's bar is gone and so is Mike Callahan, but the spirit carries on at Mary's Place, named for his daughter and run by Jake Stonebender and his very pregnant wife Zoey. On one long night a storm tears the roof off the bar and drops a better one in its place, Mary and her husband arrive unconscious out of nowhere, and word comes that a three-eyed, three-legged, three-everythinged alien is hours away from Earth. The regulars — Doc Webster, Fast Eddie, Long Drink McGonnigle — answer the way they always do: with drinks, terrible puns, songs and, when it comes to it, group telepathy

Robinson opened Callahan's Place in a 1973 short story and kept returning to it for three decades. The bar runs on a simple rule — shared pain is lessened, shared joy is increased — and the books are as much about a found community as about the science fiction that walks through the door. Robinson won both the Hugo and the Nebula, and was later chosen by Robert A. Heinlein's estate to complete Heinlein's unfinished novel, published as Variable Star. This one is best read after earlier volumes in the series; newcomers usually start with Callahan's Crosstime Saloon
