It is the second of the three Prelude to Dune books, and it fills in the childhoods and early histories of characters the original novel treats as already formed — Leto, Jessica, Duncan Idaho, Gurney Halleck and Liet Kynes. Dean Koontz praised it on the cover. Frank Herbert's Dune itself was adapted for the screen by David Lynch in 1984 and by Denis Villeneuve in 2021
