Essential Zen
Castle Books (1996)
A collection of short Zen writings arranged in loose thematic sections: koans, sayings, anecdotes and poems. Classical voices from China and Japan, including Dogen, Hanshan, Ikkyu, Ryokan and Hakuin, appear alongside modern Western practitioners and poets such as Gary Snyder, Robert Aitken and Charlotte Joko Beck. Most translations are by the editors, and the book includes a short history of Zen, source notes and ensō brush drawings.

Kazuaki Tanahashi is known for his translations of Dogen, and here he and Zen priest David Schneider gather a compact anthology. T'ang-dynasty masters share the pages with Gary Snyder and students from American Zen centers. It reads well a page at a time, opened anywhere.
