The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide
The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide
Wings Books (1996)
Seconds before Earth is demolished to make room for a galactic bypass, Arthur Dent is pulled off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for a guidebook, and finds himself thumbing rides across the galaxy in a dressing gown. Over five novels the crew of the Heart of Gold looks for a restaurant at the end of time, learns the true purpose of Earth, averts the destruction of the universe by the embittered inhabitants of Krikkit, and follows Arthur through love, home and an estranged daughter. Comic science fiction that uses the absurd machinery of space opera to satirize bureaucracy, philosophy and human self-importance

Adams began the Hitchhiker's Guide as a BBC radio series in 1978 and rewrote it as novels the following year; it later became a television series, a stage show, a computer game and a 2005 feature film. He kept insisting the series was a trilogy even after the fourth and fifth volumes, and the running jokes — the number 42, the towel, the Babel fish, Marvin the depressed robot — entered the language well beyond the books. Adams died in 2001; Eoin Colfer wrote a sixth authorized volume, And Another Thing, in 2009. This edition also collects Young Zaphod Plays It Safe, a short prequel that first appeared in a 1986 charity anthology
